Biking The Beach Coast
By Stacey Harris
Lake Michigan, fruit farms, tree-lined country roads and more; mother nature offers something for everyone when it comes to biking along The Beach Coast.
“We're very fortunate to have routes that offer such a variety of landscapes,” stated Trina Walsworth, co-owner of The Bike Stop, a family-owned shop that has been selling bicycles in Michigan City since 1982. “Visitors come from all over the country to enjoy our well-mapped bike routes that offer a diversity of riding pleasures.”
Walsworth commends the communities along The Beach Coast for determining routes to accommodate both the road and trail rider. She states that whatever your interest, there is a route for every type of rider.
such as the Indiana Dunes Bikeway System in Porter County provide scenic tours
through primary and secondary roads of Indiana Dunes Country.
There are also many types of organized rides throughout the spring and summer seasons that can be enjoyed by the whole family, including the Apple Cider Century, which travels through Southwest Michigan every September.
“There are all kinds of rides throughout the summer months of varying distances and levels. In addition, many groups publish maps which offer easy-to-follow routes both on-road and off,” Walsworth adds. “Riders can either go online or we have all kinds of maps and resources at the shop.”
These maps and websites allow riders to take advantage of the treasures found along Lake Michigan, making it easy to navigate one’s own journey.
“It’s the perfect opportunity to spend quality time with family and friends for low, or no, cost,” Walsworth concluded. “Cycling gives us a chance to experience the sights, sounds and in some cases, tastes of the uniqueness in our area.
